on march 30, 1982, joe wilson was hitchhiking outside kimball nebraska. he was struck by a passing pickup truck when he stepped out onto the highway attempting to flag it down.

the truck did not stop but joe was picked up an hour later by a highway patrolman and spent two months in a county hospital with a broken leg, which would never completely heal. during his stay in the hospital he read his bible assiduously and resolved to become a street preacher when he was released.

on june 21, john w hinckley jr was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the shooting of president ronald reagan. he would remain in institutional custody for 34 years, when he would be released with severe restrictions on his movements and activities.

on june 30, the deadline passed for the ratification of the equal rights amendment to the united states constitution. the amendment had proposed that: “equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the united states or by any state on account of sex.”
