on february 7, 1983, johnny wilson celebrated his nineteenth birthday by working overtime at wal-mart, something he routinely did. he had now been out of school for almost two years, and was contributing more to the family income than jenny, because of the amount of overtime he worked.
johnny made his first friend at wal-mart, a young man named carl darby. carl was an avid devourer of pop culture, and held strong opinions on it, which he expressed loudly but good-naturedly. he was an especially passionate admirer of michael jackson, david bowie, and star wars, and enjoyed expressing contempt and horror at johnny’s liking bruce springsteen and bob seger.
jenny did not like carl, and suspected him of being gay. she did not approve of johnny’s associating with him, but what could she do? johnny was virtually a grown man, and making more money than she did. at least johnny and carl did not see much of each other outside of the workplace, because of the long hours they put in. jenny’s recourse, as always, was to the bible and prayer.
on august 5, daisy wilson turned thirteen. she showed many signs of becoming a seriously wild child.
on october 25, united states military forces, at the direction of president ronald reagan, invaded the island of grenada, and deposed the military junta which had seized power six days earlier. the operation was so successful, and over so quickly, that no meaningful opposition or protest emerged in the united states.
