in march of 1980, joe wilson had been out of a job for over a year, and his unemployment benefits had run out.
on april 3, at ten o’clock in the morning, with jenny at work at wal-mart, and johnny and daisy in school, joe packed a small suitcase with a couple of changes of clothing, a toothbrush, razor, shaving cream, and deodorant, a pocket sized bible and three paperback books about ancient mysteries, left the house and walked the eleven blocks to the trailways bus station. jenny, johnny, and daisy never saw him again.
on august 24, a military attempt to rescue the 52 american hostages in iran ended disastrously. the mission was cancelled when three of the eight helicopters involved failed, and eight soldiers were killed in a crash when the other helicopters withdrew.
on december 8, john lennon was shot and killed in new york city, ending the dreams of millions of fans for a beatles reunion.
