on february 7, 1986, jean-claude “baby doc” duvalier, haiti’s “president for life”, finally left haiti and flew to france in a us air force jet, after months of pressure from the united states government to resign.
on the night of march 5, daisy wilson and a group of her friends had a party in an abandoned house on the outskirts of town. large amounts of beer, wine, and grass were consumed and they set the house on fire. when the police arrived, all the participants, except two boys who managed to slip away, were arrested and charged with arson and creating a public nuisance, and daisy and another girl were charged with resisting arrest. in the aftermath, daisy dropped out of school, two months before she might have managed to obtain a high school diploma.
on july 19, jenny wilson, who had put on a great deal of weight, mostly from eating doughnuts and fried chicken, and increasingly suffered from exhaustion and shortness of breath, fainted while driving a small fork lift at wal-mart, and the fork lift crashed into a large stack of color televisions, destroying many of them. jenny was fired, after seven years and four months at wal-mart.
